Congratulations to Christina Vaccarello
Congratulations to Christina Vaccarello who took a first place at the PJAS state competition at Penn State on Monday! Her analysis of anti-microbial activity from two different perspectives was indeed impressive. Two other of our seasoned PJAS students went along as much-needed volunteer workers. Many thanks to Nick Rajakovich and Brennen Adams for all their support and help at State's.

Congratulations to the Bishop Canevin Baseball team on finishing second in their conference this season with a 12-6 overall record, 10-4 in section play. The team awaits their playoff seeding, which will be announced later today.
Congratulations to senior Matt Zerishnek on signing his Letter of Intent to play baseball at Division II Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia.

Bishop Canevin Boys’ Tennis Completes Season 14-1
The BC Boys’ Tennis team capped another great season Wednesday with a quarterfinal loss to Winchester Thurston. Weather played a huge role in this loss as the match was moved indoors to the extremely fast courts at the Western Area YMCA, eliminating the home-court advantage BC enjoyed by playing on the slow Settler’s Cabin courts. However, one loss does not diminish the accomplishments of this team.
Season highlights included:
• 12-0 in Section 5 AA – second consecutive undefeated section season and Section Champs
• 14-1 overall, including another playoff win (won 82 % of all matches played)
• Have now won 30 consecutive section matches over the past 3 seasons
• 4 starters undefeated in section play:
o Ryan Mastilak – 11-0 section singles, 12-0 regular season, 12-2 overall
o Marc Slomiany – 11-0 section singles, 12-0 regular season, 13-1 overall
o Kevin Mechas – 9-0 section doubles, 1-1 section singles, 11-2 overall
o Nick Merlina – 12-0 section doubles, 13-1 overall
• WPIAL Qualifiers
o Ryan Mastilak – singles (1st in Section); doubles (3rd in section)
o Marc Slomiany – singles (2nd in Section); doubles (1st in Section)
o Kevin Mechas – doubles (1st in Section)
o Nick Merlina – doubles (3rd in Section)
o Team – 3rd seed in WPIAL tournament
• 10 different lineups in 13 regular season matches
• 13 players played in regular season matches
Please join us in congratulating the team on their great 2012 season!

The boys' tennis team won its first playoff match on Monday by defeating Blackhawk 3-2. Winning for BC was Marc Slomiany at second singles, Nick Merlina and Kevin Mechas at first doubles, and Zach Rose and Mike Manko at second doubles. The team advances to the AA quarterfinals against Winchester Thurston on Tuesday.
Iron Crafter Competition
On Saturday, April 28, the Pat Catan's arts and craft stores hosted their annual Iron Crafter competition. Bishop Canevin was invited to send a team to the McKees Rocks store, along with teams from Sto Rox High School, Montour High School, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School and David E. Williams Middle School. Each team was given an identical box of supplies to use for the theme "Cake Wars", and a 2 hour time limit to create a non-edible "cake". The competition was stiff, and Canevin had a team of only 2 members to everyone else's 4 due to some last minute emergencies. But the team of senior, Emily Rock and junior, Katie Kennedy had a very respectable 3rd place finish, with OLSH taking first prize for the 3rd year in a row. Every participant and school received a $25 Pat Catan's gift certificate. Congratulations to Emily and Katie, and many thanks to Pat Catan's.

Tennis Play-Off Updates
First Tennis Playoff Match on Monday at Home
The Boys’ tennis team earned a 3rd seed in the 16 team WPIAL AA team playoffs, and as a result, will host a home playoff match on Monday versus Blackhawk. If the team is fortunate enough to win the first round match, they will also host the Quarterfinal match on Tuesday (versus winner of Washington / Winchester Thurston). Both matches will be scheduled for 330 pm and our home courts are at Settler’s Cabin Park, right opposite Settler’s Ridge Shopping area off the parkway.
If you haven’t been to a tennis match, a few notes about fan behavior might be useful.
• Tennis has a certain etiquette in many areas. One has to do with cheering when an opponent misses a shot. Typically, fans should applaud when a good shot is hit by YOUR team. If the opponent dumps an easy one in the net, or double faults, it really isn’t appropriate to applaud that. In fact, it is considered bad form. If your player hits a great shot that the opponent struggles to return, but does so weakly, that is OK to applaud. It is the easy misses that should not be cheered. Of course, no matter how a match ends, it is OK to cheer either side, win or lose.
• Shout-outs. Because it is distracting and there are so many matches going on, there should be NO direct communication with players during matches by fans. After a great shot that wins a point, it is OK to say “Good shot, Joe” but to shout during a point (before it is over), is an absolute no-no. Please hold any direct comments for the player until after the match is completed and he has left the court.
• Excessive celebration. Please be aware that there will be up to 5 matches being played at once, so cheering loudly on one court can be distracting to the points in progress on another. Do whatever you want AFTER all matches are over (within reason), and the team has won, but before that, please use restraint. This isn’t like football or basketball or soccer where chanting or cheering during play is encouraged.

BC Forensic
Bishop Canevin High School Forensic Team recorded another successful year. Adrianne Kubiak qualified in the category of Declamation to the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament to be held May 25-27 in Baltimore Maryland. In addition, Kim Aland place 6th in the state in the category of Impromptu at the recent Pennsylvania High School Speech League Tournament which was held at Suquehanna University in Selinsgrove Pennsylvania.
Adrianne Kubiak, a freshman, will participate in her 1st National Tournament. Kim Aland, a senior, has participated in Forensics for four years and has competed in both the National Catholic Forensic League Tournaments as well as the Pennsylvania High School Speech League Tournaments.
The team is coached by Rita Yunker, a 31 year veteran coach. Ms. Yunker is quoted as saying “The forensic team’s success is not determined by their trophies, but by the lifelong skills the members develop and carry with them beyond their high school years. I am especially proud of the poise and self confidence that Forensics’ develops.”

Bishop Canevin Doubles Teams Finish in Top 8 in WPIAL AA
The Bishop Canevin tennis doubles teams did themselves proud on Thursday afternoon under scorching conditions at the North Allegheny HS tennis courts where the WPIAL AA tournament was held.
Section 5 Champions Marc Slomiany and Kevin Mechas won their first match against Burrell, but fell to a very good team from Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals. Section 5 Third-place finishers Ryan Mastilak and Nick Merlina also won their first round match against Washington, a top 5 seeded team before falling to Section 5 runner-up Thomas Jefferson, 11-10 in a tie-breaker. Section 5 had a pretty good day.
Bishop Canevin was the only school to qualify BOTH its doubles teams for WPIAL’s and the fact that both won their first round matches justified their positions in the tournament. To put it in perspective, consider this: there are 38 schools in WPIAL AA, and each submitted two doubles teams to the section tournaments – a total of 76 teams. Our two teams both finished in the top 8 in ALL of AA! That is an impressive accomplishment for Bishop Canevin tennis.

Bishop Canevin Baseball Team Honored at May 5 Pirates Game
The Bishop Canevin baseball team will be recognized for its continuing community service efforts this Saturday, May 5, at PNC Park prior to the start of the Pirates game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The members of the Bishop Canevin Crusaders baseball team do a lot more than play baseball, and their “Going Beyond the Diamond” program has done much to enrich the lives of these young men.
The team has become a great supporter of the Ronald McDonald House, not just in collecting pop tabs and supplies, but by taking the time to visit the families and patients who are in residence. The past two visits have included providing lunch, playing with the children and giving the parents some much needed attention from people who genuinely care about them. Now, the Ronald McDonald House eagerly anticipates a visit from their Crusaders family every year.
A year after the tragic events in Stanton Heights when three Pittsburgh Police officers lost their lives, the team used the opportunity at one of their home games to sponsor a fundraiser for the Fallen Heroes Fund. The game was not played due to weather conditions, but with the support of both the visiting team and the Crusaders family, they were able to collect over $2,000 in contributions. In a time when the headlines are full of negative news, it is refreshing to find a group of young athletes who can be admired and respected for their on-going service work.
This is not the first time the team will have been honored for its work in the community. In 2011, the coaches and players were recognized by Sports Faith International as Team of the Year and by the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals as Outstanding Youths in Philanthropy.

Bishop Canevin Boys’ Tennis Finishes second straight undefeated regular season!
The boys’ tennis team won 2 matches on Monday at the Settler’s Cabin Park courts to clinch a second straight Section 5 AA title in dramatic fashion and finish the season at 13-0, 12-0 in section. The team has now won the last 26 consecutive section matches over the past 2 seasons. The first match against TJ was the completion of a rain-delayed match from last Thursday, and could have gone either way. Playing down 2 starters due to schedule conflicts with other school activities, the BC boys won all three singles matches led by Ryan Mastilak’s straight set win, Marc Slomiany’s 3-set marathon, and Frank Zhu’s clutch 7-6, 7-6 win at third singles. Marc’s point clinched the match by winning 11-9 in the third set tie-breaker, and Frank’s point was icing on the cake!
In doubles, Kevin Mechas and Nick Merlina won in 3 tight sets at first doubles against a very good team, while at second doubles Mike Manko and Greg McGuire fell in 2 competitive sets.
The second win of the day was a 5-0 victory against Carlynton. By the time this match was played, BC had already clinched first place. Ryan won 6-3, 6-0; Marc won 6-1, 6-1, and Kelly Burgess won 6-1, 6-3. Kevin Mechas and Nick Merlina won easily at first doubles, 6-1, 6-1; and the team of Zach Rose and Mike Manko won 6-0, 7-5 to close out the scoring. Ryan, Marc, Kevin and Nick completed the season undefeated individually in their regular positions (Kevin filled in at singles for 2 matches and won one and lost one.)
The team enters the WPIAL playoffs in good position to get a decent seed and their first match should be HOME sometime next week. We would love to see you come out an support the team, especially our seniors!

Bishop Canevin Doubles Teams Qualify for WPIAL tournament
Last Friday, both BC doubles teams qualified for the WPIAL tournament by finishing first and third (top 3 teams qualify) in Section 5 Doubles with a couple of thrilling wins at the KO courts.
Qualifying for WPIAL’s for the second straight year was the team of Marc Slomiany and Kevin Mechas with a come-from-behind victory against a TJ team that led the entire set until the BC team won the final 2 points of the first set tie-breaker. In fact, Kevin and Marc were down 5-1 in the tie-breaker before coming back and winning the set. They rolled to victory after that with a 6-1 second set.
Ryan Mastilak and Nick Merlina won in 3 tough sets against our cross-town rivals from Carlynton in the third place match. They bounced back from a close loss in the semi-finals to the same TJ team that lost to Marc and Kevin in the finals.
Both teams will be in action on Thursday at 1 pm at North Allegheny as they compete against the WPIAL’s best 16 duos.
Join us in wishing the two teams the best of luck as they continue in this record-breaking season for Boys’ tennis at BC.

BC Spirit Night & Book Fair
Doodles the Clown , Face Painting, and author Jane Kelley
Young students have something to look forward at the Bishop Canevin Spirit Night and Book Fair. Come get your face painted and see BC senior Angela Palchowski perform magic tricks as Doodles the Clown. If you sit up close, maybe she’ll choose you to help with a trick!
Author Jane Kelley will also be available to sign copies of her new book, Nature Girl. It is a funny novel about Megan, an eleven year old girl who hikes the Appalachian Trail to find her best friend rather than spend the summer with no TV, no internet, and no cell phone.
The Bishop Canevin Spirit Night and Book Fair will be held on Tuesday, May 8th from 6:00-9:00 at the Barnes and Noble at Settler’s Ridge in Robinson. Family members of all ages are welcome!
Congratulations Alanna Trosky '10

Mastilak and Slomiany Compete in WPIAL Singles
After finishing 1-2 in the section 5 singles competition last week, Ryan Mastilak and Marc Slomiany represented Bishop Canevin and Section 5 at the WPIAL singles tennis tournament at Shadyside Academy on Thursday. Ryan won his first match easily against the 10th seed, 10-0, but due to a very unfavorable draw, fell to the #2 seed in the second round, 10-3. Ryan’s opponent is playing in the finals on Friday after losing only 3 games in the semi-final match against the 3 seed in two full sets.
Marc had an even more unlucky draw in being seeded 12th which means he had to play the 5th seed in the first round. Marc jumped out to a lead quickly but struggled for a few games before coming on strong in the final 4 or 5 games. In the 17th game of the pro-set, Marc had 2 or 3 break points but just could not get over the hump and fell 10-7. Ten-game “pro-sets” are played in the first 2 rounds of sectional and WPIAL competition, and if a player falls behind, it is very difficult to come back. Had this match been a conventional best of 3 match, the outcome may have been different.
Marc and Ryan will be competing in Sectional Doubles next week (with Kevin Mechas and Nick Merlina, respectively) so they will get another shot at qualifying for states. The team will be in action on Monday versus TJ and Wednesday versus South Park, before closing out the section season the following Monday versus Carlynton.

Bishop Canevin Boys’ Tennis wins 10th
The boys’ team beat West Allegheny on Wednesday by a score of 5-0 to run their season record to 10-0, 9-0 in section 5. Leading the charge was Marc Slomiany at second singles and Zach Rose and Mike Manko at second doubles with 6-0, 6-0 wins. Ryan Mastilak was dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles as was Kevin Mechas and Nick Merlina at first doubles with the same score. Rounding out the scoring was Kelly Burgess with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles.
This was the 8th different line-up for the team, but is likely to be the one that we use in the stretch run and into the playoffs. There are 3 remaining section matches against TJ, South Park and Carlynton, and a non-section test against Allderdice before the playoffs.
WPIAL singles will start on Thursday for qualifiers Ryan Mastilak and Marc Slomiany with the first day’s matches taking place at Shady Side Academy. Should either play advance to the semi-finals, they will play again on Friday at North Allegheny HS.
