Freshmen Hockey: BC 2, USC 1
Report by Patrick ConnollyThe Bishop Canevin Freshmen Team is still undefeated. Coach Walt Daley rallied his players to pull out a 2–1 victory over Upper St. Clair with 0:27 seconds left to play to go 4–0. Eighth Grade Goalie Julian DiFilippo and Eighth Grade forward Matt Walsh combined to seal the victory from a very disappointed USC crowd at the Ice Castle. The goalie stopped 16-of-17 shots and Matt Walsh scored the last two goals of the game. Freshman Ricky McNulty added the assist on the winning goal.
The Crusaders out shot USC 29-to-17. They controlled the game and the puck but could not find the back of the net. We found the post, glass and boards several times before scoring two goals in the third to tie and then win the game. Freshman Matt Pekular had several HUGE hits that sent many USC players off the ice shaking their heads. With injured freshman Kendall King and an in-game injury to Freshman Ryan Connolly, Freshman Zach Daley, Nick Hart, Ricky McNulty and Mike Mansmann helped seventh grader Patrick Large seal the deal on defense.
The Crusaders will face Serra Catholic next Thursday. It was a very exciting game that entertained the large Bishop Canevin Crowd and extended family in attendance. It is nice to see entire family and friends show up to support these hard working players. Congratulations to all the players and families. We will see you next week.
