HOCKEY: BC WINS PA HOCKEY SCHOLASTIC SHOWCASE TOURNAMENT
Special thanks to Frank Large
The Bishop Canevin Hockey Crusaders are the 2010 PA Hockey Scholastic Showcase Tournament Champions!
The four day tournament is an annual High School Varsity Hockey Christmas tournament that has been contested since 1996. The Crusaders won the tournament in 1997 and 1998. The tournament moved to Bladerunners Harmarville this year after several years at Center Ice in Delmont.
The Crusaders opened play on Sunday 12/26 with a 4-2 win over Central Catholic; Pete Carney and Mike Mansmann scored a pair of goals each. The following day Randy Unger scored 2 goals and captain Frank Vance registered 2 assists in a close 3-2 victory over Mt. Lebanon. Tuesday brought a game against Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic High School. Matt Walsh scored both Crusader goals to tie the score at 2 at the end of regulation. This secured a spot in the semi-final medal round. Alas, the Crusaders fell in overtime as Roman Catholic secured the top seed relegating the Crusaders to the 4th seed.
The Crusaders opened strong against the Blackhawks of Bethel Park , but needed 2 overtime periods for Mike Mansmann to score the game-winner @ 9:41 in the 2nd overtime on a redirect of Austin Large’s point shot. Matt Walsh scored 2 goals and Randy Unger chipped in with 2 assists. Goaltender Zach Daley made 36 saves in the win.
The Crusaders had to face undefeated Roman Catholic one more time in order to secure the Championship. It took another 2 overtime effort as Captain Frank Vance scored his third goal of the game with 3:03 left in the 2nd overtime tipping in a puck in the crease that had trickled through the pads of goaltender and tournament MVP Greg Procopio of Roman Catholic. Zach Daley saved 25 of 28 shots in the game while Procopio turned aside 44 of 48 in the loss for the Philadelphia contingent.

In the opening round the Lady Crusaders defeated Brownsville 73-48. Erin Waskowiak had 27 points in the opening game. Maddy McGuire had 10.

BC STUDENTS WORK PUBLISHED IN 2010 CREATIVE WRITING ANTHOLOGY
Congratulations to Joanna Weiss (’12) and Mary Scipione (’11) whose poetry was included in the 2010 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology. This volume, published by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, represents the work of 50 Allegheny County high school students from 21 different schools. Students submit their best poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction to be judged in the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest. The winners are selected by creative writing professionals and published artists.
Joanna, a finalist in the Poetry Division, submitted her work at the suggestion of her English teacher, Mrs. Diane Finnegan. Her winning poem, “Forgotten Trail,” was originally written as a response to one of Mrs. Finnegan’s journal-writing prompts. Mary Scipione found out about the contest from a librarian at the Brookline Branch of the Carnegie Library. Her poem, “AAAAGGGHHHH! Zombies,” was originally written for Oracle, the Bishop Canevin literary magazine. Mary submitted the poem to the contest based on the positive response she received from other students who read it.
Both girls plan to submit poems to the contest again in 2011. The $250.00 prize for the best work is a powerful incentive!
Special thank you to Bishop Canevin Librarian Mrs. Sue Rakaczky.

The Lessons and Carols concert showcased Bishop Canevin's Concert Band, Concert Choir, Freshman Chorus and BC Jazz. In addition, grade school choirs from Holy Child, Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Grace also performed and participated in a grand finale sing-a-long.

ATTENTION ALUMNI IN COLLEGE: DONATE YOUR BOOKS TO OUR LIBRARY
Do you have books from your fall courses that you could not sell back? If they are in good condition and you think they would make good additions to a high school library, please consider donating them to the Bishop Canevin Library. We would be happy to have these current, up-to-date resources on our shelves. You'll be helping the BC students who follow in your footsteps!
If you are interested in donating any of your college books, please contact Mrs. Rakaczky, the school librarian, at rakaczkys@bishopcanevin.org or 412-922-7400 Ext. 26 to make arrangements.
Bishop Canevin High School's 20th Annual Auction Dinner -- "La Dolce Vita" will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Sheraton Station Square. This year's event will bring together hundreds of alumni, past/current parents, faculty and friends for our biggest fundraising event of the year.
Our auction requires a year-long effort to make the event a success and surpass the prior year's fundraising total. In order to reach our $75,000 goal we need the support of a committee that can help with ideas, planning and to help increase overall attendance, donations and sponsorships.
If you are interested in joining our auction committee - or if you simply want to learn more about the event - please join us at our next meeting on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the school's Conference Room. Our meetings never exceed one hour.
While the auction is a major undertaking, our large committee allows members to pick how much or how little they would like to be involved. The delegation of work allows for a fun working environment and the end result is a substantial benefit to the students of Bishop Canevin High School and Catholic education. It's also a great way to meet other parents and alumni.

During the past five years, Bishop Canevin students have taught the Junior Achievement curriculum at Bishop Leonard-St. Mary of the Mount Academy, St. Philip, Our Lady of Grace, St. John of God, Ss. Simon and Jude. We are happy to add Holy Trinity and St. Patrick Schools to our calendar this year, but we will also miss our great experiences at St. John of God and Ss. Simon and Jude Schools.

BC STUDENTS PERFORM FOR ST. PHILIP LADIES GUILD & CHRISTIAN MOTHERS
Submitted Article
The Bishop Canevin Jazz Band and the Bishop Canevin Handbell Choir performed on Thursday afternoon for the St. Philip Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers luncheon at the Craftonian Hall. The concert was awesome and the ladies enjoyed all of the holiday music.
The Hand Bell choir played the Christmas favorites with lots of toe tapping and humming from the audience. The talented bell ringers were very impressive.
The Jazz Band played upbeat versions of the classic carols. The audience enjoyed the music and could have listened all day to the band.
The concert ended with an added surprise, Mr. Johnson included a sing-a-long for everyone to participate. The Hand Bell Choir joined the Christian Mothers at their tables while the Jazz Band played. Everyone sang and showed their Christmas Spirit. It was a wonderful and joyous sound by everyone.
The Bishop Canevin students spread their holiday spirit and touched the hearts of many that afternoon. The Bishop Canevin family is fortunate to have dedicated teachers and administration. We are blessed to have many talented students who are enthusiastic about sharing their God given gifts.
NEW BISHOP CANEVIN CRECHE ON DISPLAY IN SCHOOL'S LIBRARY
During the Christmas season, you are welcome to visit the Bishop Canevin Fr. Leo G. Henry Library & Media Research Center to see our beautiful creche. The 28 figures in the Nativity set were originally cast, painted and owned by Mr. Bruno Scuglia, former English teacher and librarian at Bishop Canevin High School. After donating the pieces to the school, he asked that they be repainted by art students. In 2009, members of the studio arts classes undertook the assignment. Mrs. Karen Kennedy, Bishop Canevin art teacher, oversaw the student work and did necessary repairs and final touch-up painting. We are so fortunate to have this lovely display in our library.
