Bishop Canevin's Junior Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies' Ancient Order of Hibernians have been actively involved in service work with the Jubilee Association for the past two years. Students from both groups make roughly eight trips each school year to the Jubilee Kitchen to help prepare and serve food to those in need and clean-up on Saturday mornings. Recently a donation was made to further the work of the Kitchen and Association and a letter acknowledging that donation, and the work of our students, is posted here. You can see by Sister Liguori's letter how many ways they undertake work to easing the burdens of so many. When we go to the Kitchen, and on other weekends as well, we take plastic containers and bags. These containers and bags allow those enjoying their lunch the chance to take food home with them for their dinner. The BC faulty and staff have been very good about bringing containers and bags to school for that purpose and we ask the BC community to consider doing this as well. Please just direct them to Mrs. Kennedy's (art room) attention. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Eternal Rest - Patty Dykta

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Patty Dykta, long-time Secretary to the Headmaster of Bishop Canevin High School from the 1970's through the 1990's. The Bishop Canevin Community will be forever grateful for her years of dedicated service to the school.

Please keep her son, Joseph, and her grandchildren in your prayers. "Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul rest in peace."

BC Bowling

The BC Bowling teams traveled to Sports Haven Lanes yesterday to challenge West Allegheny. The boys team bowled very well against their opponent and won one game earning them 2 points in the standings. The varsity team bowlers included Patrick Bernauer, Tim Gumina, Zack Mell, Mark Szymanski, Billy Greer and Steve Lucot. Together they bowled an impressive 834 series. Steve Lucot, captain, was the high bowler with a 202 score, and a 529 series.
The girls varsity team was victorious and swept all games and earned 7 points. Laura Barric-Tarnow, Ashley Grimm, Courtney Suhay, Mandy Cipriani, Emily Allen and Angela Palchowski all contributed to the victory.

This Saturday, January 28 at 8 p.m. marks our annual charity ice hockey game against the Pittsburgh Firefighters at Ice Castle hockey arena in Castle Shannon.
The proceeds from this game go towards the
North Stars Special Olympics Floor Hockey Team.
The floor hockey team needs the proceeds to travel to tournaments, so your attendance is greatly appreciated.
Admission is free for children under 10 years old and $2 for everyone 10 and older.

In addition to the game, there will be a 50/50 and raffles for tickets to a Pens game and an autographed Jordan Staal jersey.

Congratulations to the Boys' and Girls' Crusaders Swim Teams for their big win over Moon High School last night in Moon. Coach Michael Schneiderlochner led the team against the Tigers with several personal bests and relay wins. The swim team is proving to be a real powerhouse against the competition. "There were real quality performances by all of our swimmers today,” said Coach Schneiderlochner. “I am really proud of how every one of our swimmers raced the whole way throughout the meet today."

The Crusaders take to the water again this week facing Cornell High School on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Coraopolis. Be sure to come and cheer on the winning BC swimmers!

In our third year of sponsoring a swimming team, our 23 Bishop Canevin Crusaders swimmers (10 boys, 13 girls) are holding their own, with the Boys Team undefeated in the league against West Allegheny and Montour.
Assistant Coach Lindsay Ferrari has been leading the success as veteran swimming coach Mike Schneiderlochner recovers from a recent surgery and illness. He is expected to return this week.

Two PIAA-qualifying swimmers, junior Danielle Pekular and senior Jacob Nicolella continue to lead the way for the Crusaders swimmers.

This week, come and cheer on the BC Swim Team at South Fayette High School on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Boys Won Last Night!!

Assistant Coach Lindsay Ferrari has been guiding the team to victory in the absence of Head Coach Mike Schneiderlochner who is recovering from surgery and pneumonia. The team wishes Coach Mike a speedy recovery!

The Crusaders Aqua Club, which includes the high school swimmers and several younger participants recently traveled to Steubenville, OH to take on the Grove City and Steubenville clubs.

Next week, the Crusaders Swim Teams take on South Fayette at an away meet on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m.

SEMESTER EXAMS

All students are scheduled to take Semester Exams on Tuesday, January 17 (English & Science); Wednesday, January 18 (Social Studies & World Languages); and, Thursday, January 19 (Religion & Mathematics). We will follow a special exam schedule on each day with dismissal at 10:45 am. Since the midterm exams account for 20% of the semester grades, please encourage your son/daughter to study and prepare for the exams thoroughly. Often, a good exam grade provides a significant boost to the overall semester grade.

A detailed exam schedule will be posted for students. Absences during the exam days must be restricted to serious medical problems or other family emergencies. All missed exams must be made up on Friday, January 20. Arrangements should be made through the Guidance Office.

In the event of severe weather-related problems during the exam days, there will be adjustments made to the exam schedule. All adjustments would be announced on the front page of the school website. In general, these would be the guidelines for weather-related problems:

If school is canceled - the testing days (and those scheduled tests) would be moved to the next day, moving Thursday's tests to Tuesday, Jan. 24.

If Bishop Canevin has a delay - the scheduled tests for that day will still be administered on that day; testing time will be adjusted.

If your school district has a delay and BC does not - Students arriving late due to their District's delay will take the 2nd scheduled test on that day after their arrival and the missed test on Tuesday, Jan. 24th.

Given all of the potential scenarios, students should make sure that they have ALL study materials for ALL tests at home with them.

Always check the BC website for the most up-to-date information on testing.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 is the scheduled start of the Second Semester. We will follow the Day 1 schedule. Please remember that you must be current with all financial obligations to the school (tuition and activity fee) in order to receive your child’s report card.

ATTN: Tennis Players – Spring Season

As we have done in the past, the Boys’ Tennis team will be holding a number of events in the next 3 months in preparation for the spring season. Please note that until the first Mandatory practice on March 5^th, all activities are Voluntary although in the past, players that have participated in these activities have done very well in the season.

The TNT events will consist of drills and small competitions designed to put the player in many match situations in a practice setting. There will be time to work on individual needs at these sessions on an as-needed basis. Mandatory practice is required but I understand that some players may be finishing up their Winter sports or may have other activities in conflict; in these cases, please simply communicate with me to let me know your schedule. We will play challenge matches at these practices and that will determine ladder and roster standings initially. However, as most of you know, the challenge ladder is fluid up until the first league match (3/19) so there is plenty of time to move up the ladder if a player isn’t up to speed in the first week.

There are some pretty big shoes to fill this year with the departure of a couple of key players, but I like our chances to field a very competitive team. If you aren’t sure about playing, ask one of our returning players what it is like, or simply give me a call, text or email. If you already know that you would like to participate, please send me an email with your name, grade, email address, and mobile number (we do group text messages frequently) and I will add you to the distribution list directly.

As far as exercises you could be doing now, anything that strengthens wrists and forearms would be best, and lots of cardio is recommended (we had some individual matches last year that exceeded 3 hours!). I look forward to seeing you all soon!

The following letter was sent to all parents announcing the new initiative, beginning with the second semester.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Most of us are familiar with the song “It’s a Small World” popularized by The Walt Disney Company back in 1964. In today’s society with the speed of information, ease of transportation, instantaneous communication and impact on global cultures, those words were never truer. It is indeed “a small world after all.”

I am very pleased to inform you that the “smallness of our world” will come to Bishop Canevin this January through a partnership with the Holy Family Institute in Emsworth. Beginning the second semester, we will welcome several students from China who have enrolled at our school to complete their high school studies in an environment that will provide the rigorous academic requirements and broad co-curricular experiences important for the variety of college admissions requirements. Our administration and faculty are extremely pleased that they have chosen Bishop Canevin (among many other options) for their U.S. studies. Their participation and presence in our classrooms, hallways and activities will not only provide them with the rich experiences of American culture and customs, but will equally provide our students with the opportunity to learn, respect and experience the Chinese culture in this “small world” of ours. We believe that this cross-cultural experience can have many positive results for everyone at Bishop Canevin and beyond.

The students from China will reside at the renovated dormitories of Holy Family Institute, where they will be supervised in studies, English language skills and other social experiences. They will take a full load of classes, following all academic requirements like all of our students, while their families in China will take care of the financial responsibilities of full tuition, fees, room & board, as well as their necessary living expenses. Unlike a “foreign exchange” student, these young men and women will be fully enrolled at Bishop Canevin as transfer students on an F-1 visa, participating in the variety of experiences, activities and clubs that we offer our students, until their graduation from here.

As we prepare for the approximately 15 students (mostly sophomores) who will enroll in January, our administration, staff and Board of Directors will be working with teachers, students, and parents to welcome them and plan for their successful transition to Bishop Canevin. We will be forming a committee to coordinate these efforts in the very near future. Students and parents are welcome to assist in a variety of ways. There is much to be done in a short period of time. If interested, an email or letter from you would allow us to add you to the committee.

We look forward to this new and exciting opportunity which will enhance our mission to provide an outstanding Catholic education to the young men and women of Western Pennsylvania – and throughout our small world!

Margaret Gegick, Angela Palchowski, Madeleine Rebholz, and Joanna Weiss as 2011 recipients of the Saint Joan of Arc Medallion awarded by Bishop David Zubik.

The girls received the St. Joan of Arc Medallion for completing at least 150 hours of service in high school. These hours were in addition to the service required by Bishop Canevin High School.

The Mission of St. Lucy's Auxiliary to the Blind is to encourage and inspire a lifetime commitment of volunteer service in young women. The Auxiliary honors qualified candidates with the Joan of Arc Medallion while raising funds for the visually impaired.

BC Baseball Gives

On Saturday, December 10, the Bishop Canevin Baseball Team made their second visit to the Ronald McDonald House, bringing much needed supplies, toys for the children and lunch for the families. This year, there were 60 families in residence at the House and the players and chaperones had the opportunity to visit with many family members and patients. Toys were distributed to all the patients and their siblings who came down to lunch. Some of the players even became waiters for the day, carrying trays of food to families' rooms who were unable to come to the lunch room. Many parents commented on how much this visit means to them and how grateful they are that there are people out there who care. One little boy stole the hearts of all - Shawn is a loving, sweet 4 year old who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He insisted on hugging everyone before he left! Please keep him and all the young patients and their families in your prayers this Christmas Season and always.

Just as a reminder, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, December 13th, at 7:00pm in the band room to discuss the upcoming Mattress sale. This is a very easy fund raiser, but it can not happen without the support of the Marching Crusader family.

Our role is to support the company selling the top name brand mattresses. We are responsible for distributing sale signs and just promoting the sale. We will all learn more at the meeting on Tuesday.

New Bishop Canevin Nativity in Library

During the Christmas season, you are welcome to visit the Bishop Canevin Fr. Leo G. Henry Library & Media Research Center to see our beautiful creche. The 28 figures in the Nativity set were originally cast, painted and owned by Mr. Bruno Scuglia, former English teacher and librarian at Bishop Canevin High School. After donating the pieces to the school, he asked that they be repainted by art students. In 2009, members of the studio arts classes undertook the assignment. Mrs. Karen Kennedy, Bishop Canevin art teacher, oversaw the student work and did necessary repairs and final touch-up painting. We are so fortunate to have this lovely display in our library.

The Bishop Canevin Baseball team will be visiting the Ronald McDonald House on Saturday, December 10, taking much needed supplies, food and presents to the children and families who are currently in residence. Anyone wishing to contribute to this wonderful organization can contact Coach Checketts. Much needed supplies include paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, paper plates, plastic silverware), cleaning items (disinfecting wipes, cleaners, sponges), and non-perishable food items. The team was recognized this year for this philanthropic work by Sports Faith International and the Association of Fundraising Professionals as Team of the Year. Help our young men continue this tradition of bringing comfort to families in need this Christmas season.

Eternal Rest, Mr. Ron "Cy" Cygrymus

The Bishop Canevin community was saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Ronald "Cy" Cygrymus this past Sunday, November 27, 2011. Mr. Cygrymus spent 40 years at Bishop Canevin as a teacher, administrator and coach. After his retirement in 2000, he still kept in touch with faculty and friends at Bishop Canevin with frequent visits until his illness three years ago. He will be sadly missed by all in the BC community and many, many former students and athletes. Please keep his wife, Theresa, and daughters Pam, Beth & Debra & their families in your prayers.
